Cumberland Empire Days
Empire Days are one of the longest running community events in BC and are a proud tradition in the life of Cumberland. From its inception, the main focus for Empire Days has been celebration of Cumberland’s cultural diversity. Cumberland’s working mining town history is one built on immigration. Encircling downtown Cumberland are former town sites of Chinese, Japanese and African American immigrant workers. Additionally, large populations of Italians, English, Scots, Welsh each brought their culture to Cumberland as they came to the village to work in the mines.
Cumberland’s first Heritage Celebration of Queen Victoria’s May 24th birthday was held in May 1888. In 2012 the community will celebrate 124 years of May Day Celebrations in Cumberland. ![]()
