International Workers Day Bean Supper

Cumberland Cultural Centre, 2674 Dunsmuir Ave.
Doors at 6 pm. All proceeds go to the Cumberland Museum. Tickets and more information will be available in April.

The Cumberland Museum and Archives presents it’s annual celebration of the workers on Sunday May the 1st at the Cumberland Cultural Centre at 6:00 pm. Please come out with your friends and family for a taste of traditional baked beans, and local libations and treats. Kids and individuals can participate in mural painting while remembering the “songs of the workers” and the stories of working people through the musical offerings.  FMI: Visit Cumberland Museum

The Bean Supper commemorates the Big Strike of 1912 in Cumberland - a bitter and prolonged strike which saw miners’ families turned out of the company houses in which they lived. The families set up tent communities that are remembered today in the names of places such as “Strikers Beach.” The government, seeing the destitution of the miners, sent boxcar-loads of dried beans to Cumberland.

The Bean Supper also corresponds with International Workers Day - a celebration of the achievements of the labour movement held in countries around the world. Workers’ Day celebrations were an annual fixture in Cumberland until the closing of the last of the mines in 1966. The festivities featured a parade and rally for better living and working conditions. This serious business was then followed by a boisterous field day of sports activities, picnics and treats for the kids and an evening dance. 1942 Cumberland earned the unique distinction of being the only city in Canada to celebrate May Day.

Cumberland was never shy about celebrating “Workers Day,” so why not come out to dinner and keep the spirit alive? Come and be part of this annual celebration that is part of the very fabric of the Village of Cumberland. The achievements of workers in their struggle for safer, healthier and kinder working condition are achievements we all benefit from - regardless of our employment today.

Watch the Museum web site for more information about menus and entertainment.

Cumberland Empire Days

Empire Days are one of the longest running community events in BC and are a proud tradition in the life of Cumberland. From its inception, the main focus for Empire Days has been celebration of Cumberland’s cultural diversity. Cumberland’s working mining town history is one built on immigration. Encircling downtown Cumberland are former town sites of Chinese, Japanese and African American immigrant workers. Additionally, large populations of Italians, English, Scots, Welsh each brought their culture to Cumberland as they came to the village to work in the mines.

Cumberland’s first Heritage Celebration of Queen Victoria’s May 24th birthday was held in May 1888.  In 2012 the community will celebrate 124 years of May Day Celebrations in Cumberland.

MORE ABOUT TOM: Tom Dishlevoy is an architect with a practice in the Comox Valley that designs a wide range of buildings and has recently expanded the field fo work to include land use planning. Tom is passionate about making each of his projects as “green” as they can be: socially, economically and environmentally sustainable. Tom has spoken to the CV Chamber and at TEDx Comox Valley on his recent efforts and has worked with the BIAs in Courtenay and Comox helping them develop a sustainable vision for a vibrant, resilient and complete community.

Dishlevoy is the North Island Ambassador for the Living Building Challenge (LBC), a green project evaluation program that takes off where the LEEDS system ends. He presents the LBC all over the North Island including to the Comox Valley Chamber of Commerce last year.

This presentation led to Dishlevoy joining forces with several other Valley sustainability experts to enter The Living City Challenge International Design Competition. The team gathered input from hundreds of Valley residents and generated a vision of the Comox Valley that considered transit to services, housing to cultural centres; business to light industrial to urban farming. The team then created a 90 minute lecture and DVD which has been presented in whole or in part, to many audiences. The Comox Valley Art Gallery had Tom present at a four-part lunch series. He recently presented at the Elke Cole’s Green Building Colloquim in Shawnigan Lake and at Elder College.
